Current teaching responsibilities at the NSAC have included the areas of weeds science, pest management and plant pathology at both the undergraduate and graduate level. He has served on numerous committees and organizations locally, provincially and nationally in areas related to pest management and weed science.
His research has specialized in ecologically based weed management in the context of integrated pest management, including integrated weed management. Current research projects are concentrated in the area of biological weed control of invasive species and weed management in berry crop production as well as the development of biological herbicides in turf, landscape and agriculture.
Glen's seminars are sponsored by Plant Health Atlantic |
Landscape Maintenance Workshop: Monday November 21st, 9:00am - 12:00pm (Workshop Room C):"Toxicology, Agronomy and Mineral vs. Organic Soil" - The public perceives “pesticides” as a unique class of chemicals more “dangerous” than chemicals in prescription and over-the-counter medications and more “toxic” than chemicals that occur naturally in food and the environment. Actually, pesticides are intentionally designed to be toxic to plant, animal, or microbial pests just as antibiotic drugs are intentionally designed to be toxic to specific disease bacteria. Many natural chemicals in our food supply can also be toxic to living organisms. Addressing public concern requires comprehension of the science and the regulatory system; and appreciation for the judgments and predictions derived from scientific data is essential. This presentation is intended to provide a better understanding of the role of toxicology in the safety evaluation and registration process.
An understanding of how the grass plant grows and develops is critical to properly manage turf grasses. When someone understands why and how plant processes work and learns “to see what he/she is looking at” in the field, then wise management decisions based on the conditions of the turf can be made rather than trying to follow an “average” set of guidelines. Basic knowledge of the biology of plant growth and how it is affected by the soil/plant interface and its environment can lead to a better understanding of the requirements of vigorous, healthy turf growth. This is critical in an environment in which pesticides may no longer be an option. This presentation will address some of the agronomic principles required for proper understanding of grass growth.
Turf grasses are grown on many types of substrates - gravel, sand, silt, clay, organic or combinations of these components. These components form a matrix (a root zone) that is characterized by specific physical, chemical and biological properties. These properties of the root zone determine the quality of turf that can be produced under different environment, management and use conditions. This presentation will address some of the issues and concerns that arise when turf grass is grown on mineral versus organic soils.
Click here to download the workshop registration form.
Landscape Maintenance Workshop: Monday November 21st, 1:00pm - 4:00pm (Workshop Room C):"Maintaining turf without the use of pesticides- issues and challenges” and “New Products Available for Pest Control" - This presentation will present broad overview as well as specific tools on how to construct and implement natural lawn and landscape practices aimed at pest management including concepts of integrated pest management, organic weed and pest control, indicator species of turf problems. The presentation will discuss the broader implications of pesticide reduction to human and ecosystem health.
The second part of this presentation will include an overview of recent pest control products registered for use in turf and landscape situation in Canada. Discussion will focus on low risk products and biological products, providing an outline of their use and tips on their incorporation into a pest management program.
Click here to download the workshop registration form.
Seven CEC's through Plant Health Atlantic will be offered for attending both of Glen Sampson's workshops on Monday.
